November 19, 2010 was the Grand Opening of the IMAX for the public. We were asked to create a cake for everyone to enjoy that night.
Mike from Miville Photography joined us again that evening to capture these great pictures of our creation.
The style of this cake was the same as the gala cake. With this cake we focused on the Harry Potter film as that was the opening weekend for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1. The public cake was a chocolate cake with butter cream filling and covered in fondant.
This screen for this cake was done a little different then the gala cake. This screen was a sheet of rice/wafer paper that was airbrushed to give an spooky night sky look. The paper was then lit from behind to give a glowing look behind the dragon & castle. The castle and dragon were made of modeling chocolate. We tried to use key elements that represented all of the Harry Potter films.
Hagrid was re-made to make another appearance on the public cake. He was made of rice cereal treat and modeling chocolate and his lantern was lit with a single LED light. The Hogwarts Express was made of rice cereal treat and modeling chocolate as well.
Hagrid's Hut also made it onto the cake. It was made of rice cereal treat and modeling chocolate. The Weasley's car was made of chocolate cake covered in fondant & modeling chocolate.
The Sorting Hat also made an appearance on the cake sitting atop the screen. The hat was made of just modeling chocolate.
The back of the cake was again similar to the gala cake but the film canisters are for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 & 2.
We had a great time creating this cake. The Green Hornet car was the one figure that was created out of cake and covered in fondant and modeling chocolate.
Optimus Prime was created out of rice cereal treat and lots of modeling chocolate. We lit him using blue LED battery operated lights. He stood over 14 inches tall.
Like Optimus Prime, Hagrid and the Tron bike were also made of rice cereal treat and modeling chocolate. Both wheels of the Tron bike were lit with single white LED lights. Hagrid's lantern was also lit with a single white LED light.
Spider-Man was hand painted on rice paper using food coloring as the paint. He was then attached to the screen. His arm and web are made of modeling chocolate.
The film canisters that held the back side of the cake up were pumpkin spice cake with chocolate chips covered in fondant. The labels on the film canisters represent the movies of the figures featured on the front side of the cake. We put the original opening dates of the movies, the rating and where it played, the original Penn Cinema or the new IMAX theater.
We would like to thank the owners and their family's of the IMAX for involving us in this great event. We are truly honored to have been a part of your Grand Opening Gala. We wish you the best of luck with the new IMAX theater.
We would also like to give a special thank you to Penn and Aimee Ketchum for picking us and giving us this amazing opportunity. It was truly a pleasure working with you both.
We are excited to launch our blog and what better way to do it then with the first of two amazing cakes. We are honored to have been chosen to create the grand opening cakes for the new IMAX theater here in Lititz, PA.
