A Cake That Never Forgets!

Memories set the tone for great relationships. They can be funny, sad, smart, dumb. They can be between a friend, a love, a family member, or even a stranger. This cake was created to honor, congratulate, and give hope for a child leaving for college. In a parents eyes, a son or daughter no matter the age will always be your child!

We had been contacted about creating a graduation/good luck cake. really if you think about it a high school graduation really is just a point of completion preparing you for the next step. In this specific order, it was college. A caring mother was looking to order a cake for her son. It had to have an elephant on it. Her sons favorite animal is the elephant. She explained his dedication to becoming a  veterinarian, and his love for animals. She also explained his overwhelming fascination and admiration of the elephant. She felt it needed to have the school colors of Delaware University, as he at the time would be attending in the fall. We quickly came to a solution of creating a cake that resembled a circus elephant. The more realistic the better. We wanted the elephant to be regal and powerful, we wanted it to be realistic, not cartoony.

We liked the idea of a circus elephant because the riding blanket and head dress allowed us to easily incorporate his school colors. We also added the school logo and veterinary seal. All the little details to make this his one of a kind memory.

We airbrushed the  elephant to bring it to life.

Next we dressed the elephant in the university's colors, and added the tusks, a little graham cracker and chocolate shavings for earth. Chocolate boulders also added to the realism.
We delivered the elephant to a full house and unsuspecting graduate. The expression, and amazement of this ambitious young man was worth a thousand words. He examined every angle of the elephant and was in awe to find it was entirely edible. He had a house full of friends celebrating his accomplishments, and wishing him the best for his college endeavor. He had music playing, the sky was clear and sunny. He had his friends and family. This cake added to a great day that will be hard not to be remembered. He will always know the thought and ideas that his mother expressed to us, in turn allowed us to add to his already amazing party. He will always know that his mom relates to him. That is a memory sure to never be forgotten, that is love.

The holidays are over and new year begun. We maybe have made resolutions, and are trying to stick with them. This is the beginning of a series of blogs of our 2012 cakes.
We at Monkey & Me Sweets have taken a big step forward in the new year, and will be sharing soon.

For now I would like to share what makes your event memorable. We have done hundreds of cakes for all sorts of events, from birthday parties to weddings. The most memorable always have a great story. What I am talking about is the ability for someone to ask for specific things that show the recipient how much thought has gone into making their day special. One of the cakes we created was by far the truest form of this.

We had received a call from a young man about ordering a wedding cake. As brides are distributing some of their wedding tasks onto the groom to be, we had not thought to much into this and set up a tasting. This gentleman arrived at our bakery without his bride to be. We made our introductions and sat down to discuss what he was looking for. He had shared with us he was to be married and having his reception at Riverdale Manor. He also shared that his fiance and him are going with a desert option offered by Riverdale instead of a cake. At this point we were a bit confused, but he went on.
He had wanted to surprise his fiance with a wedding cake. He thought it was something she really wanted. His plan was to surprise her with a wedding cake that was them. He explained his fiance designed their wedding invitations and was hoping we could incorporate that design into the cake. He had shared the design with us, and also how much she loved willow tree ornaments. We managed to come up with a small wedding cake just for the bridal party. The other thing we did was made part of the cake that could be kept forever. We recreated the couple in a willow tree style out of gumpaste and made it so the could easily keep the sculpted figures forever.
This cake was a surprise, putting the artwork of the love of his life into a wedding cake she had no idea of. The thought, his persistance, making it happen, and showing his affection in front of everybody at the wedding. This is love, and a memory neither will ever forget.

This cake was delivered back in October. Congratulations Lauren and Christopher!
